Edward Doherty is a self employed building contractor. He was advised to register for the HMR&C Online VAT service by his accountant, as it is now a legal requirement for all new businesses registering after April 2010 and those with an annual turnover of £100,000 or more to submit VAT returns online. Edward had held off from completing this as he was unsure of how to proceed.

The adviser guided Edward through the registration process, showing him where to enter the information required by HMR&C to validate his business. The client was also guided through the enrolment process and assisted with the generation of his login details allowing him to logon to the website and submit future returns.
Finally the adviser guided Edward through the process to complete a VAT return online. The adviser demonstrated where to browse on the HMR&C website to access the open returns section and then instructed Edward how to enter the necessary details to submit a return. The adviser highlighted to the client how the online form was a direct representation of the existing paper form and that the information was simply entered into the corresponding field. The client is fully informed on how to use the Online VAT service and is now confident to use the website for all his future returns.
